2018 Haleakala Trip Notice

Nov 3, 2017

High School Hikers Journey is the Destination: Backpacking 101

Jamie Tanino, leader and Kelson, assistant leader and four high school students are on a journey of learning about backpacking and spending several days using our skills and knowledge while preparing and backpacking Haleakala.

The Orientation Meeting will be on  Sunday, Nov. 12th,  9 am through 10:30 am.  It will be held at the Oahu Army Natural Resources Program’s baseyard in Wahiawa across Wheeler Army Airfield.

This is a mandatory meeting for you to take part in future classes/workshops being held.  This meeting is also mandatory for your parent/guardian to attend because this may involve your participation on a trip to Maui to backpack Haleakala National Park.  Without your parent/guardian present at the meeting, you may attend the classes/workshop but will not be allowed to take part in the Maui trip.  It’s also important to us that you have your parent/guardian’s support in your participation in this program and for your parents to know your interests and passion.  If you haven’t done so already, please talk to your parents about this great opportunity for you to expand your horizon.

The trip cost is about $400 for adults.  The students will have a discounted rate of $100.  We’ll be staying in the cabins, hopefully all three.  I’m hoping to get the cabins for March during the public school’s Spring Break.  But if I can’t, I’ll push back the trip until after the school year in late May or sometime in June.

Some things to consider.  Since this program is for High School Hikers, the students are the priority.  Scheduling of the classes/workshops/trip will be based on the availability of the students and leaders.  However, if you would like to take part in the trip, you must also take part in all classes/workshops/events leading up to it – including HSH Ecology Camp during Presidents Day weekend in February.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to make the scheduling workout for everyone.  If you would like to attend any of the classes/workshops/events but not the trip, you’re more than welcome to join us and I’ll keep you in the email chain.

There may be conflicts with reserving the cabins for Spring Break.  If I can’t get the cabins during that week, we may have to postpone the trip until after possibly the school year in May/June.

Also, bring your calendars/schedule.  We’ll be scheduling upcoming classes/workshops.

If you have any questions, please email me at  hsh.haleakala@gmail.com or call me at 808-489-6604.  We look forward to meeting you!
